GroupWise 5.X Client Troubleshooting

This section will grow as solutions to recurring problems are found.

Installation

Error message: Cannot Load Packing.lst

Cause:

There are two main causes of this error.

1) The MAPI32.DLL in the windows\system32 (Win95/98) or winnt\system32 (NT) directory is
missing or an incorrect version.

2) The packing.lst file in the <software distribution directory>\client\win32 directory is missing or
damaged.

Solution:

There are some 3rd party applications that install versions of MAPI32.DLL that are not
compatible with the GroupWise 5.5 setup program. Usually, the application will create a backup
of the original mapi32.dll file called mapi32.bak or mapi32bak.dll in the system 32 directory. You
can rename the backup copy to mapi32.dll and then re-run the GroupWise 5.5 setup program.

One known application that replaces the mapi32.dll is Netscape Communicator 4.5 beta. To
correct the problem, open Netscape Communicator and go to Edit | Preferences. Select "Mail &
NewsGroups." Uncheck the box at the bottom that says "Use Netscape Messenger from MAPI
based applications". After rebooting, you should be able to run the GroupWise 5.5 client setup
program successfully.

If no backup file exists or if the file is missing, you can uninstall Windows messaging in the
Add/Remove Programs control panel, then reinstall it to install the correct mapi32.dll to your
system. After restoring the correct mapi32.dll to your system, you will be able to run the
GroupWise 5.5 setup program successfully.

Client

Illegal Operations

Always check the details whenever a client has caused the GroupWise client to crash.   Note which module has caused the problem.  If it doesn't present an immediate path to follow, you may be able to find a related incident in the Novell Knowledge Base.

Module: MFC42.DLL

An error involving this module may indicate that a newer version of MFC42.DLL was installed in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory by another program.  There appears to be a sporatic problem with GroupWise 5.X running a newer version of the DLL file than it was written to.  It does not seem to affect everyone.

Solution:

Check the date on the MFC42.DLL file in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.  Compare that date to that of the same file in the GroupWise 5.X WIN32 install directory.   If the date on the file in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory is newer than the date on the file in the WIN32 directory, replace the newer file with the one in WIN32.  This may take some finagling if the file is currently open.  You may have to reboot Windows and copy the file before any application has a chance to open the MFC42.DLL file.

Error C05F

Symptom

Marking the Send Items Folder or Starting a search in GroupWise will result in a C05F, a problem has occurred please contact your system administrator.

Cause

For whatever reason the recors within the database got damaged and this was the cause of the C05F.

Solutions

There are two different ways to solve this problem:

1. The error occurs in the Sent Items Folder. Then go to the Properties of that Folder. Go to the Find Tab, select the Reset Button, after that, select in Item Type: Mail and in Item Source: Send.

2. When the error occurs during a normal search, select the Send Items Folder. Then go to the Properties of that Folder. Go to the Display Tab, from the Setting Name dropdownlist, select Find Results and delete this. The next time you do a search this will be recreated. Do not delete the others which are in the list.
