Compatibility Mode Drivers
Compatibility Mode Drivers (CMD) are used when making Netware client ip connections to
IPX resources. We will continue to use IPX until all resources are connected via IP only.
One need for CMD is to connect from home using ISDN to see Netware servers. The following
information will describe the steps to install the CMD service to a Netware Client32. You
may need access to your Windows CAB files and the Novell Client 32 files so have them
handy.
Novell Client Install with CMD
- Run the setup from the client install cd/directory. (setup.exe for W9x and setupnw.exe
for NT and above.)
- Choose "Custom Installation".
- Choose "Novell Client for Windows" only.
- Choose "IP with IPX Compatibility".
- Choose "NDS (Netware 4.x or later)".
- Click Finish
CMD Install (If Novell Client is already installed)
- Open up the Network properties on your Windows 9x/nt.
- Click on the ADD button, hightlight the SERVICE option and click n the ADD button.
- Hightlight NOVELL under the Manufactures area and hightlight Compatibility Mode Drivers
(CMD) option under the Network Services area and click OK.
- If the install asks for the Windows Files, point to where your Windows CAB files are
located (Usually in the C:\Windows\Options\Cab
directory). If it asks for the Novell Client32 files, point to where they are locaed
(Usually on the Y:\Client\w95XX for Windows 9x and Y:\Client\WindowsNT\Wntxx for Windows NT/2K
where XX is the version of the Novell Client).
CMD Configuration
Once CMD is installed, you will need to configure it for our network. Follow the stpes
below.
- Open up the CMD properties.
- IPX Compatibility Scope = Blank
- Uncheck Use DHCP
- Leave Agent List Stale Time: at 15
- Type in dcccdff1 on the Network Number (HEX) field.
- Type in nwipma.dcccd.edu in the Migration Agents field and Click on ADD to place the
entry in the list box.
- Click on OK button to save and exit the CMD Config screen.
- Click OK on the Network properties screen to save the settings and reboot if necessary.
Troubleshooting
Though CMD is pretty reliable, there have been some instatnces where it would cause the
client not to see the Netware Tree. When this happens, try uninstalling the CMD service,
reboot your PC, and re-install the CMD and configure it with the proper setting.
